Successful Clubfoot Treatment in Liberia

December 20, 2016

At one month old, Vanell, a baby girl with bilateral clubfoot, arrived at FACORC, a MiracleFeet-supported clinic in Liberia. Her mother, Lois, said, “When I gave birth to my daughter, I realized that she had crippled feet after two weeks. I was unhappy because of [her] feet and more over the gossip and laughter from my friends.” Lois immediately told her husband and mother-in-law about the child’s condition and they quickly blamed her for Vanell’s birth defect.

Lois was advised to take her daughter to a clinic for treatment, however, due to the shame around her family’s accusations, she decided to go to church for prayer instead. One of her friends at the church heard her prayers and advised Lois to seek treatment. When doctors at the government hospital referred her to FACORC, a clinic with a clubfoot treatment specialty, Lois was skeptical she could get the help she needed. However, after meeting more children with clubfoot and the healthcare providers, she finally felt hope.

Upon her arrival, she was not only given words of encouragement, but Vanell also received immediate treatment with casting. After four rounds of casting, Vanell’s feet are almost fully corrected. She now wears a brace that she even seems to enjoy. We are so grateful to our donors and supporters who make stories like this possible every day.
