Writing Her Own Story: Princess’s Journey Beyond Clubfoot
In central Liberia’s Bong county, 16-year-old Princess is courageously rewriting her story. Born with clubfoot, Princess faced significant challenges from the very beginning. Despite this, she exemplifies hope and determination, demonstrating that with a little help and a lot of love, transformation is possible.
Early Struggles and Heartbreaking Loss

Both Princess and her younger brother were born with clubfoot – an extra challenge for their mother, Lucy, who already struggled to find and afford food for her family. The stigma associated with clubfoot was compounded by the fact that Lucy is a single mother raising two disabled children with extremely limited resources and no community or family support.
“People didn’t accept us,” Lucy recalls, her voice full of sorrow. “But I knew I had to fight for my children, especially for Princess, to give her a chance at a better life.”
Tragically, Princess’ brother passed away just before his fifth birthday due to health complications associated with malnutrition. It was a heartbreaking loss that added inexplicable grief to Lucy’s struggles.
The Turning Point: MiracleFeet’s Intervention
The turning point in Princess’s life came when Lucy learned that free clubfoot treatment was available at a MiracleFeet-supported clinic in Bong County. “Before treatment, I felt like I was never going to walk,” Princess reminisces. “My feet looked so different, and my friends used to laugh at me. It made me cry a lot.”
After diligently attending appointments and wearing her brace at night, Princess was soon walking, running, and playing like other children her age. But treatment was not just about correcting her feet; it was about giving her a new lease on life.
Now, at 16 years old, Princess is thriving academically, albeit a bit behind her age group. Her academic journey began later than most, starting school at age seven due to her clubfoot.
Her dream of going to college fuels her determination to do well in school. “I want to become a journalist,” she says, “I want to serve my nation, Liberia, by telling stories that matter.”
A Day in the Life of a Princess

Princess’s days are a blend of academic pursuits and household responsibilities. She supports her mother by doing household chores, often assisting with cooking by preparing rice and other ingredients on a firewood stove. Despite the simplicity of their meals, there is a sense of unity and love in their humble home.
Walking to school each morning with her best friend, Princess now projects confidence. She dresses beautifully, not just in the clothes she wears but in the confidence she exudes. “Since my name is Princess, I want to grow up and unveil the princess that lives within me,” she says, smiling as she adjusts her sneakers.
The Road Ahead
Princess’ dream to become a journalist and lift her family out of poverty drives her. She knows the importance of education and the doors it can open. “For now, I do not have a boyfriend because it is not time,” she says with a shy smile, her focus firmly on her studies and her future.
Princess’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative nature of clubfoot treatment. Once unable to walk, she is now a determined young woman with aspirations, confidence and ambitions. Her journey reflects the resilience that lives within every child—and the extraordinary potential that unfolds when compassionate, accessible medical care is within reach. Princess’s path reminds us of the impact unleashed by clubfoot treatment, not just on a child, but on an entire family.
