Stephen Teah: A World Clubfoot Day Story to Remind Us What’s Possible with Treatment

May 08, 2025

In the heart of Monrovia’s busy streets, 21-year-old Stephen Teah is living proof of what’s possible with the right support, proper medical care, and unwavering determination.

The Journey Begins

Stephen’s early years were colored by the physical and emotional challenges of living with untreated clubfoot in a remote Liberian village. Walking was painful, and everyday childhood activities were often out of reach. As one of only two children in his village with the condition, Stephen also endured the heavy burden of stigma and isolation.

In 2012, a glimmer of hope emerged when Stephen’s family brought him to the city so he could receive surgical treatment. That hope was quickly dashed as the doctors expected to perform treatment left the country suddenly – and no one had alerted Stephen or his family. However, as is often the case in life, when one door closes, another opens.

This second door came in the form of a guardian angel named Mrs. Akuny. While visiting the village to buy charcoal, a resilient woman—herself born with clubfoot—crossed paths with Stephen. Deeply moved by his situation and recalling her own experience, she saw his potential and chose to help change the course of his life.

A Welcome Intervention Leads to Incredible Achievements

Mrs. Akuny took Stephen back to Monrovia with her and became his caretaker. Not long after they arrived, she took Stephen to Faith Clinical Orthopedic Rehabilitation Center (FACORC), MiracleFeet’s partner in Liberia, where he learned about the Ponseti method, a non-surgical treatment involving a series of casts to gradually correct the foot’s position. Gradually, Stephen’s feet began to take their proper shape as he underwent treatment. The impact of this treatment on Stephen’s life was profound. No longer limited by his physical condition, he pursued his education with newfound enthusiasm. FARCOR also provided financial aid for his schooling. With renewed confidence, Stephen excelled academically, serving as his senior class president and graduating high school with honors.

Possibilities Unfold After Treatment: Stephen Teah’s Story

Stephen’s high school years at Our Lady of Fatuma High School were marked by both academic and athletic success. His passion for sports, especially soccer, blossomed and he was a starting player for the school team. “When I was a kid, I loved soccer,” Stephen reminisces. “Even with my condition back in the village, I played defense with my friends, but it was hard. After treatment though, I could truly live my dreams.”

His determination on the field mirrored his perseverance in life, culminating in memorable moments such as scoring a decisive free kick in a local match, much to the delight of his team and supporters.

Giving Back to the Community

Stephen went on to become a teacher and today is a dedicated instructor at an elementary school, inspiring and educating young children. The joy and respect of his students are palpable as they gather for devotion before heading to their classes where Stephen teaches stories like that of Ruth, instilling values of resilience and faith. But Stephen hasn’t stopped thinking of even more ways to give back to his community. He is currently pursuing a degree in School Administration driven by his vision of returning to the village where he was born and establishing a school. “I hope to graduate from teacher training college, seek funding, and build a school back in my village,” he shares. His dream is to provide quality education for children who, like him, face significant obstacles.

The Support System

Stephen’s journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of his caretaker and her family. Reflecting on their motivation, Stephen’s caretaker explains, “When I saw him, I felt sorry for him because I was in a similar situation and was able to get out.” Her own experience with clubfoot fueled her determination to help Stephen succeed. Her efforts extended beyond medical treatment, encompassing educational support and daily encouragement. She and her husband navigated copious logistical challenges, often traveling long distances on motorbikes to ensure Stephen received timely treatment.

A Future Full of Promise

Stephen’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of compassion, support, and determination. From a child mocked for his deformity to a respected teacher and community role model, Stephen’s journey underscores the importance of accessible medical treatment. His life has been profoundly transformed, and in turn, he is transforming the lives of others. As he looks to the future, Stephen’s dreams are ambitious yet grounded in his experiences. Stephen continues to inspire, educate, and pave the way for future generations to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams.
