A Steadfast Love: Marsu’s Journey with Prayer

Marsu has faced profound challenges in her life, even though she’s only 27. Her journey thus far has been defined by resilience and an unyielding love for her daughter, Prayer.
Three years ago, Marsu’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passed away leaving her and her six siblings to fend for themselves. Despite the grief and challenges, Marsu found joy when she learned she was expecting her first child. However, this joy was soon overshadowed when she learned her baby was born with clubfoot.
The devastation she felt was compounded by the fact that her partner, upon learning about Prayer’s condition, denied paternity. He questioned how he could have a child with such a condition when his first son was not affected. His departure meant Marsu was left to care for her daughter, and navigate the difficult journey ahead, alone.
“I was scared knowing that my friends and colleagues would mock me, especially with Prayer being my first child,” Marsu recalls.
Despite the abandonment and the stigma, Marsu’s love for her daughter never waivered. She named her Prayer, a testament to the strength she drew from her faith. “Prayer is the only thing I could do to gain strength,” she explains. “Even though her father let us down, when I get on my knees and pray, God will carry and direct me.”
A pathway to hope
Marsu struggled after giving birth, often finding herself in tears and overwhelmed by the weight of her circumstances. The rejection from her partner’s family added to her burden, but Marsu found solace and support in her mother, who stood by her side, offering comfort and assistance.
A turning point came when Marsu’s friend Naomi introduced her to FACORC (Friends of Clubfoot African Regional Clinic), MiracleFeet’s partner in Liberia, reassuring her that Prayer’s condition was treatable. When Marsu took her daughter to the clinic for the first time the FACORC staff welcomed them warmly giving Marsu hope she hadn’t felt in a long time.
“They told me, ‘Oh, this problem is easy, and we can handle it.’ They encouraged me, but I still had doubts in my heart,” Marsu admits. However, seeing the first cast applied to Prayer’s feet gave her a renewed sense of optimism. “When they removed it and I saw my Prayer’s feet, I was strengthened and I said, ‘Yes, we can make it.’”
The support from FACORC was invaluable. They provided transportation, medications, and other assistance to ensure Marsu and Prayer never felt alone. This was crucial as it allowed Marsu to focus on Prayer’s treatment without constant logistic and financial concerns.
A fresh perspective, a mission with meaning
Their clubfoot journey gave Marsu’s a new perspective and renewed sense of purpose. She dreams of a future where Prayer grows up like other children, receiving an education, and leading a fulfilling life–perhaps even becoming a nurse or a doctor working with the clubfoot program to give back to the community that supported them.
“I want Prayer to tell other parents or children that ‘I came through and likewise you can too.’”

Marsu’s own experience has shown her the importance of support and counseling, and she aspires to become a counselor, helping other parents navigate the challenges of clubfoot.
Her message is clear: mothers are not responsible for their children’s clubfoot, and support is essential. Marsu urges fathers and their families to stand by their partners, emphasizing that the treatment is effective and that no one knows the exact cause of clubfoot.
Having surpassed the biggest hurdles of clubfoot treatment, Marsu expresses sincere gratitude for MiracleFeet and the support they provided through FACORC, “I am very grateful because finding a solution is one thing, but implementing it is another.”
Instead of giving into despair and sadness, Marsu channeled her pain, becoming an inspiration to many in her community and beyond. Today she is helping ensure that no parent is left to navigate the challenges of clubfoot alone.
“I believe in my heart that we need to give back,” she shares. “So what I can do is devote my time to counsel other families.” Her story is a powerful reminder that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with support and perseverance. “I am so proud that today I can see Prayer standing on her feet like other children. I am so deeply happy.”
